ISLE MAURICE AWAITS: CITY CARRY 3-1 LEAD INTO DECISIVE SECOND LEG

Durban City FC travels to Mauritius this week for the decisive second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round.

Holding a 3-1 lead from the home fixture, the team is 90 minutes away from securing a place in the group stages.

The club is fully focused on the task ahead in Saint-Pierre….

The task at hand

City carries a two-goal advantage into Sunday’s fixture, having produced a strong attacking display in the first leg. Goals from Haashim Domingo, Gaston Sirino, and a late penalty by Tashreeq Morris established the lead.

However, the tie remains finely balanced. AS Port-Louis 2000 scored a crucial away goal at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, meaning the Citizens cannot afford to simply defend their lead.

A disciplined, tactically astute performance will be required to navigate the second leg.

The destination and the opposition

The match takes place on Sunday, 25 October, at the Complexe Sportif de Côte d’Or in Saint-Pierre.

AS Port-Louis 2000 represents the Mauritian capital and competes in the Mauritian Premier League. Formed through a merger of local sides during the regionalisation of football in the country, the club has a proud history, including a league title in 2016.

While the club is traditionally based at the 5,000-capacity St. François Xavier Stadium in Port Louis and trains at the historic Champ de Mars Racecourse, this second leg will be hosted in Saint-Pierre.

The Citizens are preparing for a determined opponent that will look to utilise home advantage.

Building on continental experience

The squad can draw on recent experience from earlier in this campaign. In the first round, Durban City travelled to the Intwari Stadium in Burundi to face Rukinzo FC.

In a challenging away environment, the team secured a professional 2-1 victory through goals from Kyle Jurgens and Samkelo Maseko, supported by a strong performance from goalkeeper Frederick Asare.

That fixture provided valuable lessons in managing the unique demands of football on the continent.

The road ahead

Progressing to the group stages would represent a significant milestone for Durban City FC. It would firmly establish the club’s presence on the African stage and provide a platform for further growth.

To the supporters: while the team is thousands of kilometres away, your backing remains a vital source of motivation. The players will carry the club’s colours with pride on Sunday.
