MISSION ACCLOMPISHED IN MAURITIUS

Durban City FC continued their exciting run in the Caf Confederation Cup with a 3-0 Second Leg, Second Preliminary Round win away against AS Port Louis 2000 at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex.

Sunday’s victory secured a 6-1 aggregate triumph for Durban City after winning 3-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium the previous weekend, and sees the KwaZulu-Natal side earning their spot in the group stage of the 2026/ 2027 Caf Confederation Cup.

City had booked their place in the second round after seeing off Rukinzo of Burundi 3-1 over two legs.

In Sunday’s game at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in St Pierre, there were no thoughts of any nerves as the Citizens settled in quickly and took the lead in the 12th minute through Gaston Sirino.

In the 25th minute the visitors doubled the advantage on the day thanks to Haashim Domingo’s goal; making it 5-1 on aggregate.

Jean Lubumba looked to extend City’s lead before the interval, but was caught off-side when through on goal, before being denied by a last-gasp tackle in the 40th minute.

City coach Eric Tinkler make several changes after the restart, with Luphumlo Sifumba, Ethan Brooks, Fezile Gcaba and Siyabonga Msomi replacing Sirino, Kyle Jurgens, Bandile Shandu and Mfanafuthi Mkhize respectively.

Things then got even better for City as Brooks responded with a goal seven minutes after his introduction; 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

The South African side continued to pose questions going forward, though the scoreline remained unchanged as Lubumba just failed to get on the end of Brooklyn Poggenpoel’s dangerous ball into the box from out wide.

At the other end of the park, Eden Dreyer was given some action in goal as he was brought on to replace Fredrick Asare with 20 minutes to go.

City saw out the closing minutes comfortably and can now look forward to hearing who their group stage opponents are when the draw takes place next week.
