Durban City FC return to Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday evening when the Citizens host Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout Round of 16.
City will be looking to build on their recent success and secure a place in the quarterfinals, with kick-off scheduled for 19h00.
The Citizens booked their place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages on Sunday with a convincing 3–0 victory over AS Port Louis 2000 in Mauritius, completing a 6–1 aggregate win.
With their continental campaign now set to continue in the group stages, City shift their attention to the Carling Knockout, where they will be looking to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Stellenbosch have proved difficult opponents for the Citizens in their previous meetings, with all three encounters between the sides ending in draws.
The Citizens will now be aiming to break that run and claim their first victory over the Cape Winelands side, with the result taking the winner into the last eight.
Fezile Gcaba will be looking to help the Citizens reach the quarter-finals after making his mark in the same stage of the competition last season.
The defender scored a hat-trick as City defeated Polokwane City 4–1 in their firstever Carling Knockout Round of 16 fixture, giving the Club a memorable debut in the competition.
“Last season was a special moment for me and the Club because it was our first-ever game in the Carling Knockout. To score a hat-trick on that occasion made it even better. Now we have another opportunity to progress in the competition, and our focus is on preparing well for Stellenbosch and getting the result at home,” Gcaba said.
The defender also acknowledged the unpredictable nature of knockout football, with City needing to be ready for the challenge Stellenbosch will bring.
“Anything can happen in a knockout competition, so we have to be ready for the challenge. We want to give ourselves the best chance of progressing and get the job done in the 90 minutes,” he said.
