History awaits Durban City FC this Sunday as the club embark on their Betway Premiership journey with an opening clash against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium (3pm kick-off).
Goalkeeper coach Rowen Fernandez believes the team’s rigorous preparation has them primed to announce their arrival in South Africa’s top flight.
“This is more than just our first match – it’s our chance to show the nation what the Durban City brand is all about,” the former Bafana Bafana man said. “The boys have been waiting for this moment and they’re ready to prove we belong at this level.”
A Preseason of Purpose
The club’s path to their top flight debut has been carefully crafted through a demanding preseason schedule under head coach, Gavin Hunt.
The squad’s character was tested during their KZN Premier’s Cup campaign, finishing as runners-up, playing three matches in 48-hours under challenging conditions at the UMhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.
“That tournament was good for us,” Fernandez explained. “Playing in rain and swirling wind against quality opposition was a stern test.”
The team further sharpened their readiness with a few friendlies during a focused training camp in Pretoria.
Goalkeeping Department Primed
Fernandez understands the rigours and demands of the Betway Premiership.
Former Bafana Bafana keeper, Darren Keet and Ghana International Frederik Asare are among City’s options in goal.
“We’ve worked tirelessly on handling, footwork and communication,” he said. “Our keepers know they’re the foundation – when they play with confidence, it spreads through the entire team.”
Embracing the Premiership Challenge
Fernandez highlighted the step in quality which comes with the Betway Premiership.
“The intensity is higher, the margins are smaller,” he stressed. “One momentary lapse and you’re punished. That’s why we’ve focused so much on maintaining concentration for full 90-minute performances.”
Hungry for Opportunity
The excitement within the squad is palpable as they prepare for their historic debut. “You can see it in training every day, these boys are hungry to test themselves against the best,” Fernandez observed. “They’ve earned this opportunity and they intend to make the most of it.”
While acknowledging TS Galaxy’s quality “They’re a well-coached side with dangerous players” – Fernandez emphasized the team’s self-belief. “We’re not traveling to Mpumalanga just to make up the numbers. This group has worked too hard for that. We’re going there to compete and show what Durban City can do.”
As the countdown to kick-off continues, the message from the Durban City camp is clear: Sunday isn’t just about starting their Premiership journey – it’s about making a statement.
“We are a young team but we can certainly be competitive. We are itching to get out there,” Fernandez concluded.
