MATCH PREVIEW: DURBAN CITY PRIMED FOR PREMIERSHIP DEBUT VS TS GALAXY

As Durban City FC prepares for their first Betway Premiership match against TS Galaxy on Sunday (3 pm, Mbombela Stadium), head coach Gavin Hunt believes his squad will be ready for the big occasion.

“Obviously, we pushed them quite extensively during pre-season in terms of playing the extra games,” Hunt revealed. “That was the whole idea, to test them when they’re not fresh and tired. This week, we’re bringing them down before building them up again for the weekend. It’s a knock-on process.”

The four-time Premiership winner emphasized the careful management of his squad after a gruelling preseason.

“As I said to the players, you’re not going to really be training much after playing three games a week. The intensity is up, so recovery comes into play now,” Hunt explained.

First Game Crucial for Momentum

Hunt understands the importance of starting strong in their maiden top-flight campaign. “First game of any season, you want to try and get off to a good start. Like every club, we have the same idea, build good momentum,” he said.

“But any first game is always difficult. You never know what you’re going to get, especially with players coming in at the last minute. The club had a very small squad last year and did exceptionally well. We want to build on that while adding competition, “Hunt noted.

Galaxy Pose Tactical Challenge

Hunt expects a tough test against TS Galaxy, praising their continuity under coach Adnan Beganovic. “They’re a very innovative side in terms of changing a lot, but they’ve kept continuity with their coaching staff,” he observed. Pragmatic Approach The experienced mentor stressed the need for pragmatism. “You’ve got to play in a way that gets you points,” Hunt stated.

“At the professional level, it’s about points first. We need to get ourselves in a good position and be stable, that’s most important.”
