This weekend, a new team wearing the sky blue of Durban City FC will take to the pitch. The club’s debut in the DSTV Diski Challenge marks the exciting commencement of a dedicated project: to build a winning legacy for tomorrow, today.
Forged through a stringent recruitment process, this squad has been meticulously assembled to represent the future of the club. Each player has been chosen not only for their potential but for their readiness to embrace the identity and ambition of Durban City FC. They are the first chapter in a new story.
Guiding them is a head coach whose career is a blueprint for success at the highest level. Daine Klate, one of South African football’s most accomplished figures, brings his profound understanding of the game from the pitch to the training ground. He acknowledges the scale of the task ahead with a squad built from scratch.
“We are a new team, and we’ve only had a few weeks together,” said Klate. “We are trying to build the team chemistry and get them to understand our tactics, the structure with the ball and without the ball. It’s a big process and everything is still in its early phases.
“Saturday is only the start, only the beginning. We’ve got more time to work on things properly as we go forward.”

Klate also emphasised the critical importance of the Diski Challenge in the South African football landscape, highlighting its proven track record as a conduit for talent.
“The DDC is a vital step for players graduating from the amateur ranks,” he stated. “It’s quite a jump, and it’s our duty as coaches to show these boys what is required to reach PSL level. If we look at the PSL now, over the past five to seven years, a lot of players have been produced from the Diski Challenge. In terms of development, it has shown how much it contributes to the professional setup.”
This project is a vital investment in the club’s future, creating a clear pathway for progression. The focus is on development, character, and building a winning mentality from within.
The journey begins with a formidable first challenge against Orlando Pirates at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale.
“We will try to progress and improve as we go along,” Klate added. “For some of them, it’s going to be their first time playing on television. There are certain dynamics I have to take care of as a coach. To try and motivate these boys and get them ready for the game. It’s important to start well and try to do our best.”
