A dream debut goal from new signing Letsie Koapeng and a strike from Trevor Mokwena sealed a commanding 2-0 Betway Premiership victory for Durban City FC over Siwelele FC at a vibrant Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday night.
The result sees The Citizens climb into fourth place on the table with 11 points from their first six outings.
While pleased with the result, Head Coach Gavin Hunt was candid about the team’s initial struggles, highlighting the fundamental importance of controlling the game’s tempo.
“We let them have the ball at the back, and we just couldn’t make the ball stick when it went up front. In any football match, anywhere in the world, if the ball goes forward and you keep losing it, you can’t build momentum. We couldn’t build any rhythm in the play. And once we did that, the floodgates opened,” Hunt said. “I think we can be really proud of that result,” he added.
The win was the culmination of two weeks of focused work during the FIFA break, a testament to the squad’s commitment to refining their approach.
Hunt also underscored the critical importance of every point, pointing to a demanding schedule on the horizon with upcoming fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch away from home.
“Every win in the PSL is important,” he said. “We’ve got Sundowns away, then Stellenbosch… the second round will be tough. We have to try and get ourselves in a nice position so that if you hit a wobble, you will still be okay.”
