From the dusty fields of Dunoon to the professional pitches of Durban City FC, 22-year-old defender Odwa Nyulu is rapidly emerging as an exciting talent to watch out for.
His progress, however, has been anything but straightforward, beginning in a small Cape Town township where football was simply a passion shared among friends on rough community pitches.
Nyulu grew up in Dunoon, where he first started as a striker for a local side called Liverpool FC. It was only when he moved to Table View FC at the age of 13 that coaches identified a different side to his abilities: his defensive instinct.
“They saw my potential to be a good defender,” he recalls, reflecting on the switch that would quietly shape the rest of his football journey.
Before signing for Durban City FC, Nyulu featured for Ammar Soccer Academy in the SAB League. The academy made national headlines during the 2024/25 season after winning the Nedbank Cup provincial playoffs and earning a Round of 32 clash against what was then Maritzburg United, now Durban City FC. Although Ammar lost the match 3–0, Nyulu’s performance stood out and earned him an invitation to City’s pre-season assessment, where he impressed and secured a contract.
The young talent admits that the transition to professional football has been challenging. The game is faster, tactics are sharper, and mistakes are costly. Fortunately, training with the first team and receiving guidance from senior players like Ayanda Mtshali made the adaptation smoother.
“Ayanda is someone I always talk to. He’s experienced and knows the game inside out, so his advice has helped me a lot,” explained the 22-year-old.
If there is one lesson that stands out since stepping into the top tier, it is the importance of concentration.
“One mistake can actually cost you the game,” he stated, fully aware of the pressure that comes with his position.
Nyulu’s greatest motivation comes from home. Raised by a single mother alongside three siblings, he carries her sacrifices with him every time he steps onto the pitch.
“I just want to make her happy and proud,” he said.
With three first-team appearances this season, Nyulu has settled into the squad and is perfecting his ability to read the game, one of his strongest assets. His focus is on helping Durban City succeed, but his dreams go beyond the club, as he hopes to represent his country one day.
Nyulu’s journey, from Dunoon’s open fields to professional football, is a reminder of what becomes possible when talent and determination align.
