CITIZENS BATTLE HARD TO SECURE GALAXY WIN

Durban City FC were rewarded for their intensity and focus at the Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night as they beat TS Galaxy 2-0 in a Betway Premiership fixture.

Two goals in the second stanza secured a hard-fought win for the Citizens and maintained their unbeaten run at Chatsworth in the league this season.

The Citizens were to enjoy the lions’ share of chances in the first half, starting as early as the sixth minute when Trevor Mokwena was inches away from getting on the end of a cushioned header into the box, with the goal at his mercy from close range.

The lively Mokwena was in the action again in the 14th minute, pouncing in the box before firing a shot wide from a tight angle on the left.

It was then the turn of Kyle Jurgens, who struck a venomous shot from 30-meters after a short free kick routine, Galaxy keeper Ira Tape forced into making a brilliant diving save to keep the ball out the net in the 22nd minute.

City were however to suffer a setback just before half-time when Jurgens’ night was ended through injury.

While the game remained fairly evenly balanced after the interval, Durban City continued to enjoy the upper hand in terms of chances on goal as Saziso Magawana flashed a shot wide at the near post after combining nicely with Terrance Mashego, before Brooklyn Poggenpoel had a shot blocked.

City were to take the lead in the 66th minute when Siphiwe Mahlangu’s flicked header was headed in for an own goal by Galaxy defence Patrick Fisher.

The Citizens nearly doubled their advantage two minutes later when Thabo Nodada reacted sharply to a loose ball in the box, but was unable to keep his snap effort down.

Having fought well to hold off some sustained pressure from the visiting team, City wrapped up the result in fine style when Lumphumlo Sifumba ran onto a route-one ball from Man-of-the-Match Darren Keet – spotting the opposition goalkeeper off his line and executing a beautiful lob from 35 meters out in the 87th minute.
