Durban City FC turn their focus to the Nedbank Cup this weekend as they travel to the Northern Cape for a Last 16 encounter against Upington City FC at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.
With a place in the quarterfinals at stake, the Citizens face a demanding away assignment against a side that has already proven its ability to upset higher-division opposition in this year’s competition.
Durban City booked their spot in the Last 16 after a dramatic Round of 32 clash against Chippa United at Chatsworth Stadium. After 120 minutes of disciplined defending and tactical control ended in a goalless draw, the Durban-based outfit held their nerve from the penalty spot, securing a 3–2 victory to advance to the last 16.
Upington City, who compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, progressed in similar fashion. The Northern Cape outfit stunned top-flight side Magesi FC, prevailing 5–4 on penalties after a tightly contested encounter on home soil. Their victory served as a reminder of the unpredictability of knockout football, particularly when momentum and home support combine.
Head Coach Pitso Dladla is under no illusions about the task awaiting his team.
“It’s a very difficult fixture,” Dladla said ahead of the encounter. “We are aware of the conditions in Upington, including the weather, and we understand the challenge of playing away in the Northern Cape. But the preparations we’ve had over the last few weeks have helped us prepare for this”.
While acknowledging the logistical and environmental challenges of travelling to Upington where temperatures can rise significantly, he believes the squad’s recent preparations have positioned them well for the test ahead.
The technical team has also placed emphasis on detailed analysis, ensuring that the players are fully aware of the individual and collective threats posed by their opponents.
Despite the difference in league status, Dladla has also stressed the importance of respect and focus. Upington City’s progression to this stage highlights both their quality and belief. Experience and discipline will be key determining factors in what promises to be a tightly contested encounter.
Continuity within the technical team has also provided stability for Durban City during a season that has presented its share of challenges. Dladla, who has been part of the club’s setup over multiple campaigns, believes familiarity with the squad and understanding of the team’s culture have been instrumental in navigating key moments.
That cohesion will be important as the Citizens seek to impose themselves away from home.
