Durban City played out to a 1-1 draw with Sekhukhune United in a pulsating Betway Premiership encounter at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday evening.
In an action-packed game in front of a lively and sizeable home crowd, the goals came in the final 20 minutes of the match as Sasizo Magawana scored for the second game running, only for the visiting team to snatch an equaliser a couple of minutes before the end of regulation time.
The KwaZulu-Natal side set the tone early on as they showed attacking intent from the get-go; Haashim Domingo very unlucky to watch as his audacious free kick from out near the left touchline bounced back off the crossbar in the second minute.
Eight minutes later Samkelo Maseko played in a dangerous low ball from the right which looked set to pick out Terrence Mashego right in front of the net, only to be denied a goal after a diving clearance from Sekhukhune defender Tshepho Mashiloane.
Magawana also came close with a snap shot from the left on 15 minutes, which was saved by Renaldo Leaner, before Maseko had a close-range effort blocked by the goalkeeper as well, from a right angle on the opposite side.
At the other end, Darren Keet made a great save to keep Vuyo Letlapa’s shot out the net before Siphesihle Mkhize fired wide for the visitors.
There was another chance for City before the brea, but Trevor Mokwena failed to hit the target after getting into a good position on the right hand side of the box to latch onto Maseko’s incisive pass.
Moving into the second half, Mokwena was again in action in the 53rd minute, going close with a beautifully struck curler from well outside the box out on the left flank.
Mkhize then threatened for Sekhukhune as he got on the end of an inviting cross, but fortunately the header was directed straight at Keet.
The breakthrough came with 20 minutes to play and was the result of a lovely team move down the right flank. After a great bit of work from Luphumlo Sifumba, the ball was played into the box to Joslin Kamatuka, who laid the ball back expertly for Athini Jodwana.
Jodwana’s shot with the outside of his boot brought out a fine save from Leaner, but Magawana was on hand to finish with a clinical first-time strike into the roof of the net.
There was however to be late heartbreak for Durban City as a shot deflected to Mashiloane, who fired home a powerful effort from 12-yards out for an 87th minute equaliser.
