Durban City’s trip to the Seshego Stadium ended in a disappointing 5-2 loss to Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership match on Sunday.
On a rainy evening in front of a lively crowd, there were five goals in the first half and a further two after the break. Both Durban City’s goals were from Jean Lubumba.
The home side were on the offensive right from the kick-off and City keeper Darren Keet had two saves to make in the opening two minutes.
The intensity paid dividends for Magesi as they took the lead after nine minutes after some neat combination play on the edge of the box ended with Lehlegonolo Mokone blazing a low finish into the bottom corner of the net.
To their credit, the Citizens hit back moments later to level matters through Lubamba in the 11th minute. It was a well-taken goal as the striker expertly guided in a low pin-point cross from Samkelo Maseko out on the right wing.
The goals continued to rain down in Seshego as Magesi scored in the 14th minute after Godfrey Mashigo raced through on goal and finished via a rebound as Keet’s block cannoned off the striker and into the net.
It was then 3-1 to the home side, five minutes later, when Mcedi Vandala pounced on a loose ball in the box following a cross.
City though were soon back in the game as they found the net again – Luphuhlo Sifumba rising well in the box to head a cross from Saziso Magawana into the path of Lubumba – who volleyed in at the backpost.
City continued to push for another goal as Emmanuel Jalai let fly with a long-range shot that wasn’t too far off, before Lubumba just missed out on getting on the end of a header five minutes before half time.
Lubumba was at it again after the restart, sending a header from 16-yards out over the goal on the hour mark.
But the next goal was to come at the other end as Kgothatso Mariba increased the hosts’ lead in the 65th minute when he popped up on the edge of the big box to receive a pass and fire a shot inside the left-hand upright.
Vandala then added his second for the night when he went clean through on goal and prodded the ball past Keet with 12 minutes to play.
