AmaZulu were party spoilers as they claimed a 1-0 win over Durban City FC in the final Betway Premiership game of the season, at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In an entertaining match in front of a lively crowd, an 80th minute goal proved the difference.
There were still however positives for Durban City FC to take as they clinched a top eight league finish, a few weeks after winning the Nedbank Cup.
The first half was a tight affair with not too many chances, with the opportunities that did arise, mainly falling to the team in green.
The first opening fell to Athini Maqokola, who side-footed narrowly wide after attempting to place the ball int he bottom corner of the net in the 25th minute.
Ten minutes later, Maqokola went clean through on goal, but was denied by the brave goalkeeping of Frederick Asare, who flew off his line to make a block on the edge if the big box, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
The action came at a cost though for Asare, who was forced off injured and replaced by Darren Keet.
Keet didn’t have much initial work to do though as Durban City began to find their feet in attack, especially after the restart for the second half.
Thabo Nodada signalled the home side’s intentions when he fired in a well-struck effort in the 49th minute, only to be denied by Richard Ofori in goal for AmaZulu.
Shortly after that, Tshanini Falakhe sent in a superbly-flighted cross from the left which picked out Sphiwe Mahlangu, whose header flashed a metre or so wide of the target.
At the other end, Mfanafuthi Mkhize made a brilliant defence block to stop Maqokola from curling the ball into goal.
There was little though the Durban City defence could do 10 minutes from time when Nkosikhona Radebe sent a well-aimed looping header into the net after a flick-on by Mondli Mbanjwa towards the far post.
