Durban City FC’s U18 side bowed out of the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge at the quarter-final stage following a 3-1 defeat to AmaZulu FC at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, bringing an encouraging debut campaign in the competition to a close.
After progressing from the group stages on Saturday, the Citizens returned to action knowing that another positive result would secure a place in the semi-finals. However, they were forced onto the back foot early in the contest as AmaZulu made a fast start, scoring twice in quick succession to establish a two-goal lead.
Despite the early setback, Durban City responded positively and gradually worked their way back into the match. Growing in confidence as the first half progressed, the Citizens enjoyed their best spell of the game and began asking questions of the AmaZulu defence. Their persistence was rewarded when attacking midfielder Banele Setipa pulled a goal back, reducing the deficit and setting up an exciting end to the opening half.
With momentum beginning to swing in their favour, Durban City headed into the break believing they could get themselves back into the contest.
The Citizens returned for the second half with renewed intent, pressing higher up the pitch and searching for an equaliser that would bring the sides level. While Durban City continued to search for an equaliser, AmaZulu remained disciplined and eventually capitalised on another opportunity to extend their advantage, adding a third goal that ultimately secured a 3-1 victory.
Although the result brought the Club’s tournament journey to an end, the Engen Knockout Challenge marked an important milestone for Durban City’s youth development programme. In their first-ever appearance in the competition, the young Citizens progressed beyond the group stages, reached the quarterfinals, and produced performances that reflected the quality and potential within the Club’s academy.
For a young squad experiencing the tournament for the first time, the weekend provided valuable experience against some of KwaZulu-Natal’s strongest academy sides.
