Durban City FC will begin their Premier’s Cup campaign on Saturday afternoon when they face Richards Bay FC in the quarter-finals of this year’s edition of the pre-season competition.
The fixture renews a familiar contest between the two KwaZulu-Natal clubs, who met in last season’s Premier’s Cup final, where Richards Bay secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Citizens.
As both teams continue preparations for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, defender Mfanufuthi Mkhize believes the encounter presents an opportunity for Durban City to test themselves against familiar opposition while putting last season’s final defeat behind them.
“We have faced Richards Bay on several occasions, so we know each other well and understand how they approach their games. They are familiar opponents, but we are happy to face them again in the Premier’s Cup. After losing last year’s final, we have the opportunity to put that result behind us and compete for a different outcome this time around.”
With both sides preparing for another season in South Africa’s topflight, Mkhize expects a competitive encounter but believes the Citizens are ready for the challenge.
“It will be a tough match because both teams know each other, these are the types of games that help us prepare for the season ahead, and we are looking forward to testing ourselves.”
The Premier’s Cup will also provide supporters with their first opportunity to see Durban City’s new signings in action as the Club continues to build towards the new campaign.
Mkhize believes the focus remains on building momentum and ensuring the team is ready for the season ahead.
“We have to take the lessons from last season, but also focus on what is ahead of us. We have a talented squad, and if we remain united, disciplined and continue working hard, we believe we can compete well in this competition and the season ahead.”
The defender also acknowledged the important role played by the Citizens’ supporters throughout last season and called on them to continue backing the team.
“The support from our supporters last season was incredible. They became our 12th man and gave us energy, especially during difficult moments. We appreciate their commitment and we hope they continue standing with us as we begin this new season together.”
Durban City FC face Richards Bay FC on Saturday, 25 July 2026, at 13:00 in the Premier’s Cup quarter-finals, giving supporters the opportunity to get their first look at the Citizens’ squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
