Durban City exited the Premier’s Cup at the quarter-final phase after losing 5-4 on penalties to Richards Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The pre-season match was a tight encounter and while City were not able to advance to the next round, it provided some valuable game-time and allowed several new signings to get some competitive minutes under their belts.
The opening 30 minutes saw the Citizens creating the better chances, without able to find the net.
Instead it was Richards Bay who drew first blood, three minutes ahead of the interval, when Moses Mthembu struck from the penalty spot.
Durban City came out fighting after the half time interval and were back on level terms in the 58th minute when Lindokuhle Zikhali netted an own goal following a well-worked move involving Samkelo Maseko and Lumphumlo Sifumba.
1-1 was how it remained at full-time, the game then going to penalties, which Richards Bay clinched 5-4.
