Durban City FC secured their first Betway Premiership maximum point haul of the season with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Kruger United at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Goals from Jean Lwamba and Gaston Sirino in each half secured victory as the coastal outfit moved to five points from their opening four league fixtures.
Durban City were able to stamp their authority early on, thanks to a seventh minute goal from Lwamba, who was on hand to divert the ball over the line from close range after Tylo Sanger’s volley from Samkelo Maseko’s cross had cannoned off the upright.
Stung by the setback, Kruger United came fighting back and were close when Katlego Mohamme headed over the bar from just a couple of yards out at the back post on 12 minutes. Citizens keeper Frederick Asare then did well to tip Kwanda Mngonyama’s header away from goal a few minutes later.
The home club were even closer to equalising on the half-hour mark when Boitumelo Malatjie powered a header against the crossbar.
Having done well to weather the storm, the Citizens had an opportunity in first half added time to add to the scoreline when a slick counter-attack ended with Kyle Jurgens getting a shot on goal, but from the edge of there area he was unable to find the target.
Moving into the second half and City were able to give themselves some breathing room as they found the net for the second time – Sirino expertly sweeping home a cross into the box with a low curling shot into the far corner.
Again, Kruger United came back looking for a goal as Sipho Sibiya sent a 66th minute header straight at a grateful Asare, who was later relieved to see Mohamme’s effort from six-yards coming back off the left-hand upright in the 71st minute.
Some resolute defending – including a goal-line clearance from Siphamandla Ncanana in the 87th minute, enabled City to see off a stern test from the home side, who threw everything at the KwaZulu-Natal club in the final 10 minutes of the match.
